about
'Beyond 2000' perfectly captures the retro synth feel you’d expect from a track that references a time-trapped technology TV show, and ‘The Matakana Research Institute’ comes replete with a vigorous sequence of note clusters and somehow manages to sound like a brain-damaged Jarre.
What I love about these tracks is the aesthetic: Mr Hayday loves dirty-sounding textures, but all these textual blemishes are recorded in supersonic hi-fi clarity. Yessiree, he’s done a splendiferous job on the sound of Miscellaneous Expenses, one of the best things I’ve heard thus far in 2011.

Having seen Mr Hayday's music described as "wonky pop", I can confirm that that's an entirely apt assessment: Miscellaneous Expenses, with its strange confection of synth squelches and processed beats is one of those heart-lifting electronic works that takes the coldness out of computerised music and turns it into something warm-blooded and beautiful. Tetanus in particular imbues me with the same swooning joy that Matmos' Supreme Balloon and Four Tet's Smile About The Face did. Magical.

Physically encasing a wormy wonk workout called ‘The Matakana Research Institute’ and a subwoofer rupturing purple synth’n’stuttered drum jam aptly titled ‘Beyond 2000’, if Miscellaneous Expenses ended there, it would still stand as an excellent case study for why beat dudes should always press their best jams on wax. However, the Miscellaneous Expenses 7” also contains a download code for an expanded seven song EP full of tunes which all stand on the same footing as the 7”.
